Salt Creek Land Lab Becomes Pollinator-Prairie

JrNat11The Junior Naturalists Club students and teachers Lorrie Huysman and Empress Bethel have been busy transforming the Salt Creek garden into a pollinator-prairie. The Salt Creek Land Lab is visible from State Route 56 in front of the school.

The Land Lab has evolved over time and is part of Salt Creek's history. During the past two years, the garden has been slowly transformed as teachers and students have worked with Rural Action and the Boy Scouts to bring native plants and grasses to the Land Lab. Plans are even in the works for a sign, bird houses, and other visual displays.

Students have been learning about how bees pollinate native wildflowers and have had the opportunity to read in the Land Lab and enjoy lunch there, too. Recently, they observed monarch butterflies in the pollinator-prairie on the butterflies' annual migration from Canada to Mexico.

Interested students are encouraged to join! Meetings are held on the second Tuesdays of the month after school until 4:00 p.m. Parents should pick up their students by 4:00 at the school doors on the west end of the building.
